PYOGENIC GRANULOMA
Oral pyogenic granuloma?
Oral pyogenic granuloma is also known as “pregnancy tumor” and “granuloma gravidarum”. These lesions are found else where on the surface of skin and can involve the nasal septum. Most commonly these lesions are found in the oral cavity.
The term pyogenic granuloma is misleading because it’s not a true granuloma. This term was given as it appeared identical to collection of pus but pyogenic granuloma consists of many blood vessels in loose connective tissue stroma and often prone to bleeding.
When does pyogenic granuloma occur?
Any age group can be affected with pyogenic tumor. Females are more likely to be affected with this lesion especially during pregnancy than compared to males. The reason why females are more commonly affected is due to sex hormones. Female sex hormones cause increase in vascularisation and proliferation of the cells. Pyogenic tumor in pregnancy is typically seen on the gums region between the teeth. It appears as intense red to purple color and bleed profusely even on slightest provocation
Treatment
Usually there is no treatment as the tumor regresses due time. In long run the tumor might undergo fibrosis and require surgical removal. Besides the surgery, the dead tissues on the affected area are removed by scaling (professional cleaning) of the adjacent tooth. Good oral hygiene should be maintained to prevent further recurrence.
